FOOTBALL: Camera arrive with players at Rails' passing camp (UPDATED)

When Lincoln Park's football team hit the field for a passing camp Tuesday, MTV cameras and a production crew came, too.

Disclaimers were posted on the fence surrounding the practice field, (Fujifilm FINEPIX F10 Charger) entitled “Cablecast Language: ‘Wait Til Next Year’” with the notice that those entering the field “may be videotaped or recorded” for a New Remote Productions Inc. program.

Production workers said there was no official name for the project, but the crew spent the rest of the week in town, according to MTV vice president of production and MTV series development Julie Schwachenwald.

A few months ago, word leaked that MTV was considering Lincoln Park, along with two other schools, for a new reality series similiar to the former “Two-A-Days,” which was based on a powerful Alabama program, Hoover High School.(Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W35 Charger)

This time, a different show would focus on a rebuilding, downtrodden team.

Lincoln Park has lost 43 straight games — a streak that stretches nearly five years.

Lincoln Park superintendant Richard Rockwell confirmed that the school had been chosen recently, but said a pilot was the only thing confirmed for the show.(Canon NB-5L battery)

Official word from MTV this week backed up Rockwell’s statement.

“The show is just a pilot at this point,” MTV Senior Vice President of Communications Alison Rou said in an email.

The Railsplitters are attempting to turn around their fortunes with former Coach Jim Kalbfleisch, who led the team to its only playoff win and its last winning season.

Kalbfleisch most recently helped his son, Dan, turn once lowly Huron into a playoff team last fall.(Fujifilm NP-70 Charger)

On Tuesday, while camera crews and sound technicians swarmed the Railsplitters' huddle, a practice took place between Huron and Lincoln Park.

Coaches, players and parents on the field did not comment on the program or the session, citing agreements they’d signed with producers. (Sony NP-FH50 Battery) One Lincoln Park parent said “pretty much everyone signed something.”

“I’m under orders not to talk,” Lincoln Park Coach Jim Kalbfleisch added.

Eight Lincoln Park players wore microphones during the practice, which featured only non-contact passing drills.

After getting the okay to talk from the crew, Rails' sophomore Dakota Luna said the cameras didn't make him nervous.

"It's a good experience," he said.(Sony DCR-DVD201 Charger) "I'm always myself for everything. It doesn't matter if they tell me to do this or that, I'll be myself.”

"This camera stuff with them being here doesn't change anything. I think we're going to make the playoffs this year."

As with the football players, a small group of cheerleaders also had a camera and sound technician filming them on the sideline with at least one of them wearing a microphone and Nikon COOLPIX S220 Charger battery pack.

The player drills went on as usual, but production people were sprinkled around the field.

Huron’s Jordan Frayer said the cameras weren’t much of a distraction.

“It was different,” he said. “(Coach) Kalbfleisch said they would be in the way a bit, but you just have to play like they’re not there.”

At one point a player made a catch inches from a cameraman, who held his ground before smiling with relief.

At the end of the practice, as Kalbfliesch approached the team huddle for some final words, he was told to come back in a little bit.

“Sorry coach, we need to change a Canon EOS 350D Charger battery,” a cameraman said sheepishly. “Just give us five minutes.”

Tuesday’s was the third of six passing camps. Detroit Cass Tech comes to town in two weeks.

Kalbfleisch, said the team has shown improvement from the first camp.

“We’re making progress,” he said. “We still have a long way to go.”

Lithium Battery Technology

The dynamic, technical and complex level of research that is employed in developing new dell inspiron 1545 battery makes the electrical storage landscape and battery market difficult to follow. This article serves as follow up to an earlier investigation of storage technologies, and looks more specifically at advantages and limitations of lithium Dell studio 1737 ac adapter batteries. The challenge for retail investors to navigate this arena for prospective future outlook can often appear as daunting as it is for consumers to make optimal choices for current electrical storage requirements. A closer investigation of lithium Dell latitude d600 ac adapter battery types in terms of energy density, longevity, load characteristics, maintenance requirements, self-discharge and operational costs may be useful to bring context for consumers and prospective investors.
Battery manufacturers are aware of consumer demands and have responded by offering electrical storage formats that are optimal for specific applications. Both the mobile phone and personal computing device industries offer examples of clever innovations with an emphasis placed on small size, high energy density and low price. Longevity is often regarded as a secondary consideration and although one Dell inspiron e1505 ac adapter battery type may be designed for small size and long runtime, the pack will not last and wears out prematurely. Lithium ion packs that are currently being produced for defense applications exceed the energy density of any commercial equivalent and these super-high capacity Dell latitude d430 ac adapter batteries are deemed unsafe in the hands of the public and the increased cost prohibits commercial marketability.
The fastest growing Lenovo 3000 g530 battery system is the lithium ion storage format where high-energy density and light weight is of prime importance. The technology is fragile and a protection circuit is required to assure safety. Currently, the primary applications include notebook computers and cellular phones with the highest potential for anticipated electrical vehicle demand.
Historical context
Pioneer work with the lithium Dell inspiron 1545 ac adapter battery began in 1912 under G.N. Lewis but, it was not until the early 1970s that the first non-rechargeable lithium batteries became commercially available. Lithium is the lightest of all metals, has the greatest electrochemical potential and provides the largest energy density per weight.
Attempts to develop rechargeable lithium Dell inspiron 1501 ac adapter batteries followed in the 1980s, but failed due to safety problems. Because of the inherent instability of lithium metal, especially during charging, research shifted to a non-metallic lithium battery using lithium ions. The lithium ion is a low maintenance Acer aspire 9301awsmi battery, an advantage that most other chemistries cannot claim. There is no memory and no scheduled cycling is required to prolong the HP pavilion dv6000 ac adapter battery’s life. In addition, the self-discharge is less than half compared to Nickel Cadmium units, a critical distinction for investors since it enables the lithium ion technology to be well suited for modern fuel gauge applications.
Several drawbacks for the technology include a protection circuit to maintain safe operation and overall Sony vgp-bps2 battery fragility, aging concerns with capacity deterioration noticeable after one year. Consumers and investors should note that capacity deterioration is not exclusive to lithium ion technology as other chemistries also have age-related degenerative effects.
Practical applications for electric vehicles
Early adoption technology consumers in some markets eager to purchase initial models of the Nissan Leaf or Chevy Volt will put their trust in lithium ion Dell inspiron 1525 ac adapter battery that have been scaled up to electric vehicle proportions. The future of electric car batteries is still a relatively open frontier of research and development with considerable investment funded by the current U.S. administration’s appetite to minimize dependence on foreign oil sources.
In May, ten teams including privately owned Dell inspiron 1420 battery technology ventures, public companies, university programs and government laboratories were awarded grant money through the Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) . The ARPA-E program money will support development projects for two to three years, at which point the teams that have met ambitious milestones should be ready to demonstrate working prototypes.
The Batteries for Electrical Energy Storage in Transportation focused on funding programs that promise to at least double the performance of the best of today’s lithium ion Sony pcg-nv100 battery. The U.S. government has also heavily incentivized manufacturers to produce lithium ion electric car batteries in the U.S.
The research in motion
Applied Materials Inc. (NASDAQ:AMAT) is attempting to produce ultra-high energy, low cost lithium ion Sony pcga-bp2v battery enabled by “disruptive” new manufacturing processes. The novel approach focuses on developing a high energy density porosity-graded cathode on 3D current collectors, an integrated separator, and a suite of modular manufacturing processes that have the potential to transform lithium ion battery manufacturing technology. If the project is successful, it will establish a U.S. presence and leadership in the manufacturing of high energy, low cost advanced lithium ion Dell inspiron 1520 battery technology for electric vehicles.
Critical density
Energy density gets primary attention because it determines the distance a vehicle can travel once it is charged. Geographic limitations of certain markets might create impediments to electric vehicle penetration until superior results are documented. Working to address this specific issue is privately owned HP pavilion dv4 battery manufacturer Sion Power. Sion is developing a lithium sulfur battery that it reports will have three times the energy density of lithium ion Dell xps m1330 battery. One primary goal set forth by the firm to market storage devices for electric car manufacturers is to enable a 300 mile driving range. The company believes lithium sulfur batteries promise higher energy densities than competitors such as magnesium ion and fewer technical limitations than lithium air batteries.
Planar Energy claims its solid-state lithium-ion Acer aspire 5720 battery design can deliver three times the energy density of today’s lithium-ion batteries at less than half the cost per kilowatt-hour. The solid-state inorganic nature of the battery is the key to its high performance.  The temptation to try solid-state lithium-ion FUJITSU fpcbp83 battery is not new, but earlier trials ran into cost barriers. Early innovators borrowed vacuum deposition technology from the semiconductor industry, resulting in a process that cost 20–30 times what it should to be competitive. The Planar process deposits semiconductor-quality films from a solution. The nanostructured films are grown directly on a substrate and then sequentially on top of each other.

Unique rare earth recycling process for rechargeable batteries developed

Brussels -- Umicore and Rhodia have jointly developed a unique process for the recycling of rare earth elements from Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) rechargeable Olympus c750 Battery. This recycling process combines the capabilities of Umicore’s proprietary Ultra High Temperature (UHT) Sony Np-qm91d Battery recycling process with Rhodia’s rare earth refining competences. The process can service the whole range of NiMH COMPAQ Armada 4131T AC Adapter batteries from portable applications to the Panasonic Cga-s006 Battery for hybrid electric vehicles. It is expected that first recovery of rare earth materials could take place by the end of this year.

The process will enable the recovery of rare earths from NiMH ACER Aspire 7520 AC Adapter batteries that will be treated at Umicore’s new Sony Vgn tx16c/W Battery recycling plant in Hoboken. After the separation of the nickel and iron from the rare earths, Umicore will process the rare earths into a high grade concentrate that will be refined and formulated into rare earth materials at Rhodia’s plant in La Rochelle (France).

Sybolt Brouwer, General Manager FUJIFILM FinePix Z30 Charger Battery Recycling and Recycling Development at Umicore, commented: “This is the first industrial process that closes the loop of the rare earths contained in NiMH Acer Aspire 5920 Battery. It demonstrates the uniqueness and flexibility of Umicore's UHT recycling technology and underlines our commitment to closing the materials loop.”

Frédéric Carencotte, Industrial Director of Rhodia Rare Earth Systems, said: “After the recycling of rare earths contained in low energy lamps, this agreement represents a new step in our strategy to recycle rare earths from end-of-life equipment.”

The main use of nickel metal hydride Panasonic Lumix Dmc-fp1 Battery is in rechargeable AA and AAA Dell Inspiron 6400 Battery (typically used in domestic applications such as cordless phones, toys and games), power tools and hybrid electric vehicles. A typical NiMH battery will contain some seven percent of rare earth elements including cerium, lanthanum, neodymium and praseodymium. This equates to some one gramme of rare earth for a AAA battery, 60 grammes for a household power tool and two kilogrammes for a hybrid electric vehicle battery. Lithium-ion rechargeable batteries contain no meaningful amounts of rare earth elements.

Buy tablets that haven't been released in India

Although manufacturers might have delayed the launch of certain tablets in India there are websites that offer doorstep delivery of devices that might not otherwise be available in the country.

Recently there was an uproar in India about the delay in the launch of iPhone 4 in India, but it was not a one off incident. In fact, most manufacturers who have presence in other countries usually delay launching their products here.(Nikon EN-EL4 Battery)

Similar is the case with tablet computers. Despite a virtual rain of tablets in recent times, many of these devices have officially not been launched in India. An interesting fact here is that you can still buy these products thanks to online shopping websites.

We did some research on a couple of these websites like Shop Your World, 20 north and so on in order to find out the availability of popular and most anticipated tablets, which although they have not been made available in India, are still available for purchase.(Canon LP-E6 battery)

The working of these websites is simple. Users are required to place an order for the product they want. The product is then ordered from abroad and dispatched to the node office of these websites, which in turn dispatches the products to the buyer sitting here in India.

Using these services it is possible to get these products in India without them having been launched here.

Motorola Xoom(casio np-40 battery)

It is probably one of the most anticipated tablets of this year. Based on the Nvidia Tegra 2 dual core processor and Android Honeycomb operating system, this 10.1 inch tablet offers a mix of features and performance.

Xoom is famous because supports Flash and has exceptional Canon ULTURA Battery life of 10 hours, as claimed by Motorola. The device has 32 GB of internal storage and along with that an external memory card slot is also provided to expand its memory by another 32 GB. Xoom has a 5 megapixel rear camera capable of recording 720p HD video and a 1.2 megapixel front camera for video conferencing.

The tablet is a WiFi-only device and does not support 3G, but considering 3G data costs it is a good idea to stay indoors connected to a high speed network.(Panasonic PV-GS9 Battery ) The Xoom also has USB ports via which it can be connected to USB powered peripherals like keyboards, flash drives and so on.

The Xoom costs about Rs 38,000 and this includes the price of shipping and duties levied on imports.

Dell Streak 7 inch

The Dell Streak 7 inch WiFi-only tablet is by far the most powerful small tablet available. Powered by a 1 GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 dual core processor, it leaves less room for competition with bigger tablets while giving better performance and portability.(Canon BP-511 battery) Its 7 inch display allows this tablet to be easy on the pocket and meanwhile enhances mobile usage.

A 3G version of this tablet is also available, but that comes locked with service providers so it won't work in India unless you get it unlocked. It has Android 2.2 Froyo as its operating system and comes with 16 GB of internal storage, which can be further expanded by 32 GB. Streak 7 has a 5 megapixel rear camera capable of recording 720p HD video and a 1.3 megapixel front camera for video conferencing.

Being a smaller device, the Streak has less Canon NB-2LH Charger battery backup — limited to 4 hours. It costs approximately Rs 22,000.

Viewsonic G tablet 10.1

Viewsonic Gtab 10.1 has an Nvidia Tegra 2 dual core processor and a 10.1 inch capacitive touchscreen. It features Android Froyo 2.2 operating system, but the software has been optimised for use on a tablet so users will not face any problem while using it.(Olympus Stylus 770 SW Charger)

The Gtab has 16 GB of onboard memory besides a 16 GB expandable memory slot. The rear camera is missing from the Gtab, but it has a 1.3 megapixel front facing camera.

Users will have to pay a price comparable to that of Dell Steak 7 for owning this device. It costs about Rs 22,000.

Asus EeePad transformer Tab

This product has a much hyped design, which allows it to be converted to a full fledged laptop with the help of the optional keyboard and trackpad docking station. Apart from adding the trackpad and the keyboard, the dock works as an additional casio np-40 battery and port. Although the docking station is an additional accessory we are sure it will justify its price.

The Eeepad also features the Nvidia Tegra 2 dual core processor, Android Honeycomb and 10.1 inch capacitive touchscreen. It has 32 GB of internal storage and 32 GB of memory expansion capacity. The Eeepad has a 5 megapixel rear camera capable of recording 720p HD video and a 1.2 megapixel front camera for video conferencing.
One of the best things about Eeepad is that its dock, rather than just adding functionality also adds a bigger Canon EOS 550D battery to the device, making it run for almost 16 hours on a single charge.

To buy the Eeepad users have to pay approximately Rs 33,000 but the docking station costs an additional Rs 14,000.

The Camera Specs That Matter

A decade into the digital camera revolution, there are still lots of people who believe that more megapixels mean better cameras. But it's more important to look for Toshiba pa3420u-1brs Battery features that will help you take high quality photos quickly, like quick startup time and easy to use controls. For an all-encompassing list of the specs you should be looking for in a new camera, see our complete digital camera buying guide. (Toshiba Equium a200-15i Battery )Cameras: Specs That Don't Matter
Digital cameraDigital zoom: Digital zoom technology is getting better, but a camera’s “digital zoom,” “enhanced zoom,” “intelligent zoom,” or other creatively rebranded feature still does the same thing as it always has: It crops your image in the center and enlarges that cropped area, reducing the resolution of the resulting image.(PANASONIC SV-AV10-R Charger )You can do the same thing with your photos through image-editing software, and if you need to enlarge part of a photo during playback, you can do that with the camera’s zoom controls without affecting the source image. Related: Photo Resizing Tricks
Digital image stabilization: We’ve seen cameras with some incredibly effective stabilization systems--optical and mechanical stabilization systems, that is. Digital stabilization? (Acer Aspire 3610 Battery) Meh, not so much.
“Digital stabilization” systems normally work in one of two ways: They boost the ISO sensitivity to noise-inducing levels (allowing the camera to use a faster shutter speed), or they work in video mode in much the way a digital zoom does, by cropping and enlarging the image in the center of the frame, and then using the rest of your scene as a buffer zone to ensure that the center of the video looks somewhat steady. (Acer Aspire 3020 Battery)We’ve rarely been impressed with digital stabilization alone, but cameras that use a combination of optical/mechanical and digital image stabilization are usually quite effective. Just be wary of cameras that offer digital stabilization only. Related: Using Your Camera's Image Stabilization
LCD screen size and resolution: Like it or not, point-and-shoot cameras have largely done away with optical viewfinders, and LCD viewfinders that measure 3 inches or more on the diagonal are now the norm. Such screens are great for reviewing photos and performing basic shot composition, but you’ll get over that extra real estate quickly. Big screens drain the camera battery faster, and a sharp, high-resolution LCD can make image quality look better than it actually is. Your images may appear noticeably more soft or blurry at full size, but you won’t know that until you offload your pictures to a computer--which means you’ve already missed the chance to reshoot on the spot.
In general, it’s best to use your LCD for shot composition only, as color fidelity, sharpness, and exposure levels may look much different when you've offloaded your photos.(Panasonic Dmw-bce10e Battery ) Use your camera's histogram! Related: Use the Histogram to Avoid Exposure Issues

Cameras: Specs That Sometimes Matter

Megapixels: You shouldn’t ignore megapixel counts entirely, but keep in mind that this spec matters much more in the realm of DSLRs and large-sensored cameras.(Samsung bp1310 Battery ) Many people confuse high megapixel counts with indicators of how good a camera’s image quality will be, but in reality it’s simply a measure of how large you can view, resize, or print an image without seeing a noticeable decrease in resolution. Megapixels translate to image size, not image quality, so you should factor in a camera’s megapixel count mainly if you plan on making large prints or cropping and enlarging portions of an image.
In small-sensored cameras, such as point-and-shoots and camera phones, a higher megapixel count often leads to noisier photos.(Sony Cybershot Dsc-h7/B Battery) Higher megapixel counts also translate to larger file sizes, which takes a toll on your storage card space and your ability to share images electronically without first reducing them in size. DSLRs have the sensor size and powerful optics to capture high-quality images at high resolution, but most point-and-shoots struggle with image quality at high megapixel counts. Related: Point-and-Shoots With the Best Image Quality | DSLRs With the Best Image Quality
High-definition video recording: You may be drawn to a bargain-bin pocket camera (Hp Pavilion dv5-1012ea Battery) because it shoots "HD video," but not all “high-definition” video is of the same caliber--even if it’s billed as “1080p.” Similar to megapixel counts, “720” and “1080” simply refer to the number of horizontal lines the video footage will scale to on an HDTV set. The actual video quality depends on a lot of separate factors: the recording bitrate, the quality of the lens and sensor, the frame rate of the video capture, progressive versus interlaced video, file compression, and other variables. (Ibm Thinkpad r31 Battery)
Video performance is hard to generalize across the board; it depends on the individual camera, and we’ve seen great (and not-so-great) high-definition video shot with both point-and-shoot cameras and DSLRs. Related: Best DSLRs for Video | Best Point-and-Shoots for Video
ISO: This is another spec that gains much more value in the world of DSLRs. Most point-and-shoot cameras now have astonishingly high ISO sensitivity settings--usually up to ISO 6400 or even ISO 12800--but their small sensors heat up quickly and add a lot of visual noise starting at around ISO 400. A DSLR handles the upper reaches of the ISO range much better, thanks in large part to the bigger (and cooler) surface area of its sensor. (OLYMPUS PS-BLS1 battery)If low-light shots and fast action are important to you, a DSLR with high-ISO settings is a good fit. But if you’re looking at point-and-shoots, consider one with a dedicated low-light mode that does something more than jack up the ISO. Related: Take Exciting Photos at Night

Cameras: Specs That Always Matter

Digital cameraPhysical buttons for manual controls: If you want to get serious about photography, you don’t need to buy a DSLR right out of the gate. (CREATIVE DAA-BA0005 battery)You can save money and still learn the ropes by buying a compact camera with full manual controls for aperture, shutter, focus, and exposure compensation. It’s a good idea to experiment with those controls and gain experience before you spend big bucks on a digital SLR. Look for a (Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T77 Charger)camera with traditional buttons and dials for manual controls for a couple of reasons: It will make using those same controls on a DSLR more intuitive, and touchscreen manual controls just aren’t ready for prime time yet. Related: Best Point-and-Shoot Cameras With Manual Controls
Fast startup time and burst mode: Shutter lag isn’t much of a problem anymore. By and large, every camera autofocuses quickly once you half-press the shutter button, and snaps a shot immediately thereafter. That said, modern cameras (Sony Dcr-trv740 Battery) can still make you miss a shot in a few significant ways. A delayed startup time can slow you down, so look for a camera that lets you power it on and shoot within about a second and a half. In some cases you may need to disable the “splash screen” that displays after you turn the camera on, so check whether the camera lets you turn that off.
A camera’s “burst mode” or “continuous shooting” speed is also an underrated spec: Even if you’re not a sports or action photographer, the ability to fire the shutter continuously can help you capture the perfect shot of a hyperactive pet, a fidgety baby, or another finicky subject. (Acer Aspire 3610 Battery)Look for a burst mode of 3 frames per second or greater, but keep in mind that some cameras’ burst modes reduce the resolution of each photo to increase processing speed. Related: Take Your Best Shot
Features that fit your needs: If you just want a car to drive to the local grocery store at a maximum speed of 35 mph, it’s pointless to buy a Ferrari. Likewise, the most important thing to think about before making a camera purchase is how you’ll be using the camera and which features best serve your needs (and your budget). (Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T700 Charger)
Sports and wildlife shooters will want a long-zoom lens and a fast burst mode. If you’re planning on taking your camera on vacation, you might be best served by a ruggedized model that can shoot underwater, or a GPS-enabled camera that geotags your photos for mapping them later. If you want a high-quality camera (Hp Pavilion dv7-1050ea Battery) that’s more portable than a DSLR, consider a compact interchangeable-lens camera or a point-and-shoot with manual controls. And if you just want something that’ll offer significantly more than your average cell phone camera, look for manual controls, a fast burst mode, or a larger-than-average optical zoom range.
The good news is that cameras tend to hold their value longer than other forms of electronics do, so when you feel it’s time to upgrade, you can probably fund a generous chunk of a new purchase by selling your old gear.

Lenovo ThinkPad T420s Review

While laptop buyers have been flocking to 13-inch platforms for portability or 15-inch models for mainstream affordability, the happy-medium 14-inch thin-and-light has been all but forgotten. But Lenovo continues to update its venerable T-series in lockstep with Intel’s processor upgrades. The ThinkPad T420s employs the same extra-thin chassis as the T410s it replaces, now with the latest, second-generation Core i5 and Core i7 CPUs. hp pavilion tx2500 battery life could be better and the price ($1,389 for our midrange configuration) will keep it out of reach for most consumers, but the T420s delivers a road-worthy platform that any business buyer will envy.
Design
The T420s uses the same super-slim chassis as the T410s, and that’s a good thing. It costs more than the non-“s” T420, but averages a scant nine-tenths of an inch thick (compared to 1.25 inches for the T420) and weighs 3.9 pounds (compared with 4.8 pounds for the T420). (dell inspiron 1525 battery)To put that weight in perspective: The T420s weighs just 3.2 ounces more than the 13.3-inch ThinkPad X1 we reviewed recently, and we would happily carry an extra few ounces to gain the larger screen.
On the outside, the T420s is classic ThinkPad: blocky, matte-black, and some might say boring. The non-slip paint treatment gives a sure grip and hides fingerprints, but there’s no denying that the brushed-metal enclosures of competing high-end laptops have more visual appeal.

The ThinkPad T420s sports a swappable bay that can accept an optical drive or a second compaq presario v3000 ac adapter battery.
More thrilling—at least to road warriors rough on their machines—is the design on the inside. The T420s features Lenovo’s “roll cage:” an internal carbon-fiber skeleton that protects internal components from flex. The bottom cover and keyboard bezel are made out of magnesium alloy for added strength with minimal weight. The T420s has also passed eight U.S. military testing specifications (Mil-Spec for short), (hp omnibook 6000 ac adapter)including those for humidity extremes (up to 98 percent), low/high temperature, sand, altitude, vibration, and mechanical shock. And for that unexpected turbulence on the plane, the T420s keyboard is spill-resistant, and the machine has drainage holes on the bottom to quickly whisk wayward liquid—tested up to 4 ounces—out of the machine.
Another welcome design touch is the swappable bay, a laptop feature that is going the way of the wooly mammoth. You can slide the lever on the bottom of the T420s to pop out the standard optical drive and swap in an extra battery (a $119 option). In addition to the bay, you’ll find a decent selection of ports arrayed on the edges of the machine. The left side houses a USB port, a headset jack, and a memory card reader. (There’s also a spot for the optional 34mm ExpressCard slot.) Around back are two more USB ports, a LAN jack, a DisplayPort connector for attaching to a TV, and a VGA connector for hooking up an external monitor or projector. (hp pavilion zv5000 battery )This platform doesn’t have an HDMI port, which is the more popular connector for HDTVs here in the U.S., but a DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter is only a few bucks if you need one.
Features
The reason to buy the T420s over the likes of the ThinkPad X1 is the larger screen, and here the T420s does not disappoint. The 14-inch panel has an impressive native resolution of 1,600x900, which gives you enough pixels to have two application windows open side-by-side when needed. Of course, it also means that text at default settings will be tiny—crisp, but tiny—so plan on utilizing Windows’ font scaling and the zoom commands in applications if your age is north of 40.
The LED-backlit panel is very bright, although we noticed the anti-glare coating does rob some “pop” from colors.(dell xps m1730 battery) Video playback looked excellent, with natural color reproduction and no motion blur, although for videos (and games for that matter) the panel has a narrow sweet spot; move to the left or right, and you’ll see a color and brightness shift. This could be an issue for business users who want to use the T420s as a presentation device and tend to use video in their programs.
You won’t need to apologize for the audio quality, however. The stereo speakers flanking the sides of the keyboard deliver a surprising amount of volume for such a thin laptop, and we did not detect distortion even at max volume. There’s even some bass presence—a rarity among sub-4-pound laptops. Enhancing the audio experience is the Dolby Home Theater v4 technology, which gives more presence and creates a wider perceived sound stage. (acer aspire 3000 battery)The Dolby utility offers a range of audio settings, including equalizer presets for music, movies, games, and custom settings you can save. A virtual surround-sound slider lets you select the amount of surround enhancement; while we noticed the difference in headphones, we didn’t hear the difference through the speakers (although as noted, the sound was terrific to begin with). (sony vgp-bps13 battery)We did appreciate the utility’s Dialog Enhancer checkbox, which helped make dialog easier to hear in movie scenes with too-loud background music.
In addition to the extra screen real estate, the other reason to buy the T420s over the ThinkPad X1 is the keyboard. While the X1 incorporates a very good Chiclet-style keyboard that tries to mimic the classic ThinkPad keyboard feel and sound, the T420s includes the real deal. The full-size keyboard is solid, with just the right amount of key travel (the up-down range of motion) and tactile feedback as you type. Lenovo had improved the keyboard in the T410s generation, and those changes carry over: a smaller gap between keys (to keep crumbs from collecting underneath), a larger Escape key, and an LED indicator on the Caps Lock key. (Compaq presario cq60 battery)As with other ThinkPad models, Lenovo has included both its classic TrackPoint stick and a touch pad. And as with other ThinkPads, we love the precise movement the stick delivers and appreciate the pebbled low-friction surface of the touch pad, but we wish the pad were larger.
It wouldn’t be a T-series without the pitch-perfect ThinkPad keyboard. You’ll also find both a pointing stick and (smallish) touch pad, fingerprint reader, and dedicated volume buttons.
Above the Function key row you’ll also find dedicated volume/mute buttons and a microphone mute button—handy on those working-from-home days when the kids come barging in while you’re on a call. And speaking of handy conferencing features, the T420s incorporates some neat extras. Most notably, (hp compaq business notebook 6910p battery )the Lenovo Communication Utility offers two microphone settings. Private Chat focuses the mic pickup in front of the laptop and suppresses background noise, so your party can hear your voice over the din of, say, an airport waiting area. Conference Call mode opens the audio capture field to a full 360 degrees around the machine, which is ideal for a group of participants around a table. In our trials, with the microphone setting on “one voice,” the voice of the speaker directly facing the screen was pronounced, while the voice of a speaker off to the side was much more muted. When set to multiple voices, we were able to walk around the T420s in a complete circle, and at all points the voice pickup was nearly the same.
The Lenovo Communications Utility also includes an option to suppress keystroke noise during a VoIP call, but in our Skype calls we noticed only a slight difference. (TOSHIBA satellite a135-s4467 battery)And speaking of Skype, it is the only preloaded way to make use of the 1,280x720 Webcam. There is no dedicated camera utility for grabbing stills and video as you’ll find on most laptops. The Communications Utility does include a variety of very granular settings for the Webcam, including brightness, contrast, saturation, sharpness, and backlight compensation. In our trials, the low-light camera delivered a very good image in a dim room, with decent color reproduction and an acceptable amount of motion blur. In a dark room, with only the light from the screen, we got a dim but usable image. As with most low-light cameras, however, the image in bright light (with sunlight coming through an adjacent window) was overexposed.
The T420s has a slim profile, perfect for work and travel.
The T420s delivers the Lenovo Enhanced Experience 2.0 features, which work with the Windows 7 operating system to speed up such tasks as booting up, resuming from sleep/hibernate mode, and reconnecting to Wi-Fi networks. On the security front, the T420s includes a fingerprint reader standard, as well as TPM (Trusted Platform Module) circuitry and utilities.(hp pavilion g60 series battery) TPM solutions allow a company’s IT department to manage log-ins and passwords, communications access, platform integrity, and drive encryption.
Speaking of drives, enterprise customers can order the T420s with storage ranging from a 7,200-rpm 320GB hard drive, as on our unit, to an optional 128GB ($350) or 160GB ($430) solid state drive. Naturally, the traditional hard drive features active protection, where an accelerometer sense bumps and drops and signals the drive to park the heads to protect against data loss. Customers ordering CTO systems can select from two 802.11a/g/n chipsets and two 802.11b/g/n chipsets, or an 802.11a/g/n + WiMAX configuration. (dell vostro 1400 battery)There are also four embedded wireless broadband radio chipsets available, the most popular choice being the Gobi 3000 Sierra Wireless EV-DO/HSPA Minicard (a $125 option).
Options continue on the performance-component front, where build-to-order models can be ordered with a Core i3 CPU, one of two Core i5 CPUs, or even a smoking Core i7 CPU. Our T420s came with the midrange Core i5-2540M processor running at 2.6GHz, along with 4GB of 1333MHz DDR3 memory. This CPU is very close to the 2.5GHz Core i5-2520M in the ThinkPad X1 and X220 we tested, and performance was on a par—which is to say, very good.
For example, on our productivity benchmarks, the T420s delivered a strong score of 7,779 on the 64-bit version of PCMark Vantage, which measures overall system performance. ( ibm thinkpad r40 battery)That’s well ahead of the 5,214 of the Toshiba Portégé R830, a 13.3-inch business laptop, and also beats out the thin-and-light class average of 5,860. On our 64-bit Cinebench 10 benchmark, which tests all CPU cores, the T420s scored a very impressive 10,823— the highest score we’ve seen on that test from a thin-and-light.
The T420s’s "Sandy Bridge" CPU, hyper RAM, and fast 7,200-rpm hard drive also made quick work of our multimedia tests. Need to convert your music library from MP3 to AAC format? No problem. The T420s converted 11 tracks on our custom iTunes Conversion test in 2 minutes 47 seconds. The Portégé R830 took 3:27 here, and the category average is 3:51. On our Windows Media Encoder test, where we encode a 3-minute, 15-second video clip, the T420s took just 3:08 seconds. That trounces the times from the R830 (4:34) and the category average (5:01).
As with other Sandy Bridge platforms with Intel’s integrated HD Graphics 3000 chipset, 3D acceleration is good for daily Windows chores and low-impact DirectX 9 3D gaming, but not more demanding DX10 games. The T420s delivered a score of 4,079 at 1,024x768 resolution on 3DMark06, which measures DirectX 9 graphics performance. (toshiba satellite 1905-s301 battery)That’s below the 4,555 the Portégé R830 turned in but ahead of the 3,871 category average. What does that mean for business types-turned-gamers when work is done? Well, a DX9 title like Company of Heroes can be played with some satisfaction if you dial back the effects settings and turn off anti-aliasing; we saw a frame rate of 47.4 frames per second under these conditions. But on the more demanding Just Cause 2, the T420 delivered an unplayable 8.77 fps at 1,366x768 resolution.
The only area where we were a little disappointed in the T410s was in dell inspiron 1545 battery life, and that carries over to the T420s. The slim six-cell dell latitude c640 battery lasted just 2 hours 29 minutes on our DVD Acer aspire one d250-1165 battery-rundown test, where we watch a DVD movie until the machine shuts down. That’s better than the 2 hours 13 minutes we saw on this test from the T410s, but still behind the three-and-a-half hours typical for thin-and-light laptops and way short of the Portégé R830’s 5:32. If runtime is important to you, be sure to pick up the optional bay dell inspiron 1545 ac adapter battery ($119), which could get you another couple of hours, but you’d still be shy of all-day wireless computing.
Conclusion
Beyond the Windows 7 Professional operating system and aforementioned Skype utility for audio and video calls, you get Lenovo’s own excellent software tools accessible via the blue ThinkVantage button. In this suite you’ll find applets for rescue and recovery, managing connections, a password manager, and system health and diagnostic tools. (sony vgp-bps2 battery)You also get a communication utility to assist with Web conferencing. We especially like Lenovo’s Access Connections utility, which makes it easier to set and enable/disable your Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and (if present) wireless broadband connections.
The price of our T420s includes a generous three-year warranty, with 24/7 tech support and on-site service. As with other business portables, a range of warranty upgrades and insurance protection plans is available.
With the ThinkPad T420s, Lenovo has updated its ultraportable and thin-and-light lines to have a fast Sandy Bridge offering at every screen size—12-inch (X220), 13-inch (X1), and 14-inch (T420s). (Acer aspire one 10.1 battery)Given the noticeable bump in convenience of the larger screen and swappable bay and the not-so-noticeable weight penalty, we’ll take the T420s all day long. It is arguably the best business thin-and-light money can buy.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V review

Two years ago, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V's 16X-optical-zoom lens would have been enough to turn heads. In today's world of ever-shrinking cameras with ever-expanding zoom ranges, that zoom lens is simply one of this camera's many distinguishing factors.
For example, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V offers three ways to capture 3D images, excellent 1080p video capture at a category-leading 60 frames per second, (Sony DCR-DVD92E Charger) GPS functions and a digital compass for geotagging images, a searchable in-camera help guide, a 10-fps burst mode at full 16-megapixel resolution, manual controls, and one of the best implementations of a low-light shooting mode of any camera.
Despite that stellar résumé, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V has a few omissions and shortcomings that may peeve experienced photographers: (Fujifilm FinePix F11 Charger)The camera has no RAW shooting mode, it offers no aperture- or shutter-priority modes to go along with its manual shooting option, it has a small sensor crammed with 16 megapixels, and its aperture maxes out at F3.3 at the wide-angle end of the zoom.
However, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V makes up for most of those deficiencies with heaping helpings of creativity and versatility. This top-rated pocket megazoom camera may ultimately appeal more to gadget hounds. Its video capabilities are unmatched in its class, and it's a great entry point into 3D still-image capture, as it's an excellent camera beyond its 3D modes.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V: Hardware and Design

The Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V is Sony's latest camera STILL CAMERA DV7000 to feature a low-light-optimized, backside-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor, and this one clocks in at 16 megapixels. The camera's ultrawide-angle 16X-optical-zoom lens (24mm to 384mm in 35mm film equivalent) has a maximum aperture setting of F3.3 at wide-angle to F5.9 at full telephoto. You have full manual control over the camera's aperture and shutter settings independently, but aperture- or shutter-priority modes aren't in the mix.
The camera's long-zoom lens remains steady at full telephoto thanks to its optical stabilization system. When recording video, you also have the option of engaging the camera's "Active Steady Shot" mode to compensate for an even greater range of motion.(Olympus PS-BLM1 Charger)The HX9V is compact for its impressive optical-zoom range, but still not entirely pocketable. Its body measures 1.4 inches deep, 4.25 inches wide, and 2.4 inches tall, which is pocket-size only for NBA players and cargo-pants aficionados. Its rubberized handgrip and textured thumb rest are a great ergonomic tandem; together they make the camera feel very secure when you're shooting with one hand.
You operate the camera's pop-up flash via in-camera menus--you'll find no physical button to make it pop up--but you can physically click it down with your finger to hide it.
One slight oddity is that the Canon LP-E8 battery charges inside the camera. The HX9V comes with an outlet adapter that lets you charge the camera via a USB cable, and you can also charge the Sony DCR-SR55E Charger battery while the camera is connected to a computer. The socket on the camera's bottom is proprietary, however, so not every USB cable will work for charging the Sony NP-FM55H Charger battery and offloading media.
The Cyber-shot HX9V's 3-inch LCD screen is extremely bright and crisp, making it a standout display for reviewing photos and navigating in-camera menus. However, its LCD quality can be a bit misleading while you're reviewing and composing photos in the camera: colours often look brighter and more vivid on the HX9V's screen. It's a good idea to use the camera's histogram to make sure that your shots are properly exposed.
Like many recent Sony cameras, the Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V accepts both SD/SDHC/SDXC cards and Memory Stick Duo cards; its dual-card slot accepts one format or the other at a time. (Canon EOS 5D battery)It's also compatible with the proprietary TransferJet Memory Stick cards, which allow you to share images and videos wirelessly with other TransferJet devices within close physical proximity.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V: Shooting Modes and Features

Over the past few years, Sony has honed its lineup of creative in-camera features for a variety of shooting conditions.(Fujifilm FinePix Z35 Charger) As with many other recent Cyber-shot cameras, the HX9V's shooting modes are notable for their innovative takes on common photography challenges in addition to their entertainment value.
For example, Handheld Twilight mode uses exposure bracketing and automated image stacking to create well-exposed shots without a flash in low-light settings. The HX9V also has easy-to-use scene modes that instantly create panoramic images and shallow-depth-of-field, blurred-background shots without your having to adjust the camera's aperture settings.(Samsung BP70A Battery )
This year's Cyber-shot cameras also include assorted options for shooting 3D still images, including a 3D Sweep Panorama mode that works just as the camera's normal panorama mode does: You press the shutter and pan the camera from side to side, and then the camera creates an ultrawide-angle image. In addition to the 3D panorama option, the HX9V offers a 3D Still mode that simply creates a three-dimensional snapshot (no panning required), as well as a Sweep Multi-Angle mode that lets you change viewing perspectives after snapping a shot by tilting the camera back and forth.
You'll need a 3D TV and the appropriate glasses to see shots taken in 3D Sweep Panorama and 3D Still mode in their full three-dimensional glory, (Sony NP-FM50 Battery)but you can view the Sweep Multi-Angle shots in-camera without using glasses.
More-traditional shooting modes include a 10-fps burst mode that comes in handy when you're trying to capture fast-moving subjects, a motion-tracking autofocus option that also helps with action shots, and two separate Auto modes: a normal "Intelligent Auto" mode that works much as any other camera's Auto mode does, (Nikon EN-EL4 Battery) and a "Superior Auto" mode that uses exposure bracketing to boost colours and image brightness.
The camera's video capabilities also go a few extra steps farther than most competing pocket megazooms, thanks to a smooth 60-fps frame rate for 1080p video recording and a handful of scene modes that are available while you're recording movies: a background-blurring "Soft Snap" mode; a dedicated Twilight mode for low-light recording; dedicated video modes for fireworks, snow, and beach scenes; and manual controls over ISO sensitivity when shooting video.(Canon NB-2LH Battery)
Beyond those shooting modes, a few other helpful in-camera features are in the mix. The mode dial provides access to a "Memory Recall" option, which is essentially a custom setting that lets you toggle among three user-defined manual exposure presets. This camera also has an In-Camera Guide that's more extensive and helpful than anything I've seen before, thanks to a searchable index that covers everything from basic shooting advice to clear definitions of in-camera modes to photo-printing tips.
In general, using this camera makes it clear that Sony has a lot of experience in creating a wide range of handheld gadgets beyond cameras, from phones to game consoles to media players. (Sanyo VPC-MZ1 Battery)The Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V is simply more fun to use and more advanced in interface design and features than most cameras we've seen in its class.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V: Performance, Image Quality, and Video Quality

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V errs on the side of oversaturating colours and overexposing shots in Auto mode, so it's a good thing the camera has manual adjustments available for exposure compensation. (Samsung SB-L110 Battery)Its pop-up flash is a bit too strong, producing blown-out bright spots and washed-out highlights in a lot of cases. In Auto mode without the flash, we saw grayer whites and oversaturated colours, as well. To get the most out of this camera, you'll need to use its specialized scene modes, and even then, it's not the best pick in terms of colour accuracy.
Even so, the HX9V earned scores of Good for exposure quality and Very Good for sharpness in PCWorld Labs subjective tests for image quality.( Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W170 Charger) colour fidelity and distortion were its main weak spots, as on each of those categories it turned in a score of Fair.
You can view the full-size test images we used for our subjective evaluations by clicking the thumbnails at left; press the left and right arrow keys on your keyboard to scroll through all our sample images.
Although we've seen better still-image performance from similar cameras, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V is a serious force to be reckoned with in the realm of video capture. (Canon CB-5L Charger )Test footage taken in the camera's highest-quality 1080p, 60-fps setting in AVCHD format was incredibly smooth and sharp; the HX9V also does a decent job in low-light settings. The camera earned a video-quality score of Superior, putting it among the top point-and-shoot cameras in terms of video quality that we've tested thus far in 2011. Audio captured through its top-mounted stereo microphones also received a score of Superior.
Battery ( Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T700 Charger) life is solid, but nothing extraordinary. With the GPS functionality turned off, the HX9V is rated at 300 shots per charge of its lithium ion Canon LP-E10 battery, which translates to a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX33 Charger battery-life rating of Good.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V: In-Camera GPS Features

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V's in-camera GPS features are fairly basic, as they're limited to geotagging shots for mapping purposes once you've offloaded the images from the camera.(Canon LEGRIA HF M306 Battery)
You don't get the in-camera mapping features and real-world location names found in the Casio Exilim EX-H20G, but the HX9V does offer the ability to geotag photos and instantly place them on a map interface via Flickr; you can also drag and drop them into Google Earth once your shots are on the desktop.
You can view the raw longitude and latitude data for each shot within the camera by using the "Detailed Data" option during image playback. Thanks to the camera's digital compass, it shows you which direction you're facing in real time while you're using the camera, and directional data is included in each photo's GPS data too.
The initial satellite linkup can take up to 5 minutes, and you'll need a clear view of the sky; some delays I experienced may have been due to the fact that I tested the camera's GPS functionality on a very overcast day. Your satellite connection time may vary. You can turn the GPS functionality off to preserve Samsung SB-L110 Battery life, which is a good idea if you're not using the feature.
Like the camera's 3D shooting modes, the HX9V's GPS features are nice to have, but we wouldn't suggest buying the camera for its GPS functionality alone.
