I own a Dell XPS M1210. I bought it because it was powerful and small and kinda lightweight. I didn't buy it because I wanted to sit on an aeroplane and work.
Nonetheless, it'd be nice to get a bit more battery life out of it. There are a lot of reviews out there raving about the battery life, but that's the review models sing the 9-cell battery. It's an 80 watt-hour pack that sticks an inch out the back of the machine, ruining advantage number two: small size. So I bought the 53Whr 6-cell battery and only get two and a half hours of battery life. This laptop is a power hog.
For comparison, my previous laptop (a Dell Inspiron 4100) used a 59Whr pack and got four hours of life. You could remove the CD-ROM, put two battery packs in there, and run all day without ever plugging in. That was a mobile laptop, apart from the fact that it weighed 3kg in that configuration.
Just to compare, the old laptop (almost five years old!) sucked down 15W on average. The new laptop uses 21W. And it's using "the latest in power management technology"!

A Battery You Can See Through

Transparent Acer aspire one 10.1 battery could lead to designs for cell phones and other gadgets.
Researchers at Stanford University have made fully transparent Dell inspiron 1525 ac adapter batteries, the last missing component needed to make transparent displays and other electronic devices.
Stanford materials science professor Yi Cui, who led the work, says a tremendous amount of research goes into making dell inspiron 1545 battery store more energy for longer, but little attention has been paid to making them "more beautiful, and fancier."
Researchers have previously made transparent variations on other major classes of electronics, including transistors and the components used to control displays, but not yet dell inspiron 1720 ac adapter batteries. "And if you can't make the battery transparent, you can't make the gadget transparent," says Cui.
Some dell latitude d810 ac adapter battery components are easier to make using transparent materials than others. The electrodes are the tricky part, says Cui. One way to make a transparent electrode is to make it very thin, on the order of about 100 nanometers thick. But a thin electrode typically can't store enough energy to be useful.
Another approach is to make the electrode in the form of a pattern that has features smaller than the naked eye can see. As long as there is enough total electrode material in the dell 6y270 battery, this type of electrode can still store a significant amount of energy. Cui designed a mesh electrode where all the lines of the mesh are on the order of 50 micrometers, effectively invisible, and the squares inside the mesh contain no compaq presario 1200 ac adapter battery materials.
Fabrication is also tricky, since the usual methods for making components at this resolution require harsh chemical processes that damage battery materials. The Stanford group instead used a relatively simple method to make the transparent mesh electrodes, which are held together inside a clear, squishy polymer called PDMS.
They start by using lithography to make a mold on a silicon wafer. Then they pour liquid PDMS over the mold, cure the polymer to solidify it, and peel it off the mold. The PDMS sheet is then engraved with a grid of narrow channels. Next they drip a solution of electrode materials onto the surface of the PDMS. Capillary action pulls the materials in until they have filled all the channels to create the mesh. The researchers used standard lithium-ion ibm 02k6821 battery materials to make their electrodes.
To make the complete battery, they sandwich a clear gel electrolyte between the two electrodes, and put it all inside a protective plastic wrapping. The Stanford researchers created prototypes, and used them to power an LED whose light can be seen through the hp elitebook 6930p ac adapter battery itself.
Cui says these batteries should, in theory, be able to store about half as much energy as an equivalent-sized opaque hp pavilion dv6-2000 ac adapter battery, because there is a trade-off between energy density and transparency. They can lay down a thicker mesh of electrode materials to store more energy, but that means less light will get through.
So far, his lab's prototypes can store 20 watt-hours per liter, about as much energy as a nickel-cadmium dell vostro 1400 battery, but Cui expects to improve this by an order of magnitude, in part by reducing the thickness of the polymer substrate, and also making the trenches that hold the electrode materials deeper.
Another way to store more energy without sacrificing transparency would be to stack multiple cells on top of one another in such a way that the grid of the electrodes lined up, allowing light to pass through. So far, the group has made electrodes that are about an inch across, but Cui says they could be made much larger, and the material could simply be cut to the desired size.

Three seconds of fame for a Berkeley tech whiz

BERKELEY —
When film producer Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, Aliens, Thelma and Louise) and director Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland), collaborating with YouTube, issued a global call for people to capture one day in the life of the world on video, more than 80,000 clips streamed in.(Dell latitude E5500 Adapter)
Phil Loarie
Phil Loarie explains how he captured the moon on video for "Life in a Day."
The result is the crowd-sourced documentary film Life in a Day, which will reach U.S. theaters Sunday, July 24, exactly one year later.
And the very first clip — all three seconds of it, showing the moon rising over the Oakland hills — was shot by a 24-year UC Berkeley employee/tech whiz who spends his spare time making electronic music and videos.(KENWOOD TK240 battery)
Phil Loarie, a systems administrator who does tech support for the Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences Department in the College

of Engineering, used a palm-size Sony camcorder to capture the moonrise as seen through shimmering thermal layers from Ford Point, on the bay near his Richmond home.
It opens a 95-minute story cobbled from snippets submitted from 192 countries — more than 4,500 hours’ worth — in response to its makers’ call for people to participate in “a historic cinematic experiment,” a snapshot of the world and its 6.7 billion people in one day.(Canon Nb-4l Battery)
Loarie watched the film for the first and only time when it streamed online during its U.S. premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January.
“I was almost in tears,” Loarie recalls. “I was so excited.”
Twenty minutes in, his laptop battery died and he raced to a nearby Starbucks to plug in his computer. He got there in time to catch the  last 40 minutes — and see the credits roll. His name came first. And then the tears really did well up.(Acer Aspire 5051awxmi Battery)
“I thought, it’s been 35 years and that’s my first,” says Loarie, who has lived and breathed film and music since high school and has used electronics to create both since catching the tech bug as an undergraduate at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. He came west to earn a master of fine arts degree in electronic music at Mills College.
Bigger than the credit, he says, was the feeling of taking part in something so communal — something that anyone with a video-capable camera or phone could do.
“It’s all about doing it, with all these great people, and learning — and getting a little recognition is a nice thing,” Loarie explains over lunch from the salad bar at the Faculty Club.(Panasonic Nv-gs180 Battery)
Life in a Day is kaleidoscopic, building a daylong arc from glimpses of the mundane and the extraordinary in a multitude of languages and landscapes. Babies (and a giraffe) are born, a calf is slaughtered, people get married and brush their teeth and impersonate Elvis, according to one reviewer who saw it at Sundance. It ends up expressing a collective hope, he wrote.(Toshiba pa2487ur Battery)
The trailer gives a taste of its emotional reach. The climax of a section labeled “fear” shows a mountain climber looking down on a pristine panorama of snowy peaks and saying, “I’m afraid of losing this place.”
Loarie, who has anywhere from 15 to 25 music and video projects going at any one time, heard about Life in a Day from a friend. He was already YouTube savvy — his “SchmueyVision” channel there shows 32 of his videos — and has been a regular competitor in Vimeo video contests, which he never wins.
YouTube Preview ImageLoarie’s original footage.
Grabbing his camcorder and heading out was a natural. The videos had to be shot on July 24, 2010, and Loarie made the most of his 24 hours. (SAMSUNG DVD-L1200 battery )He took time-lapse shots at Richmond’s harbor, and took his first stab at a moon video — but the fog came in and the moon set at 3 a.m. Later he shot a friend in her garden and a few takes of the fog coming in and steam billowing from the Richmond refinery, did a few more marina shots, and then headed to the pier at Ford Point at the end of Harbour Way.
By then it was 9:26 p.m., an hour after sunset. Loarie needed the windshield to help steady the camera, and shot southeast through atmospheric distortions caused when the cool night air blew in off the bay and collided with the day’s heat rising off the land.(Acer Aspire One Battery)
“It was like shooting through Jell-O,” he says. “I was careful to breathe slowly and not make a sound. Time was running out as the fog was creeping in.”
He got three takes — and then his camera battery died.
A week later came the deadline for submissions. Loarie uploaded 11 videos. Six or eight weeks after that, he heard from the editors. They liked one of the clips and wanted his original footage. It was his last moon shot. In the end, they used 10 seconds of it, sped up to three.
Now, Life in a Day is opening in U.S. theaters, with National Geographic as distributor. It will get a special one-night-only benefit showing on Sunday, July 24, in dozens of theaters nationwide. (The website lists Fairfax, Brentwood, Livermore and Petaluma in the Bay Area.) General release starts July 29. And it will be available online and as a DVD at a later date.(ORANGE SPV M600 PDA battery )
The curious or obsessed can already flip through 5,642 of the clips considered for the movie on the Life in a Day YouTube channel.
Loarie credits his years of computer work at Berkeley with helping to shape his real life outside of the university by giving him plenty of opportunities to learn how computers can assist not only engineers but artists as well.
“This has to be the best day job I have ever had,” he says.

Chevy Volt at Home: LinkedIn Exec Charges at 120V (VIDEO)

I have a friend who is a connector (according to Malcolm Gladwell's The Tipping Point, "the kinds of people who know everyone") and he just bought an electric car. Sony NP-FH50 Battery
Given that his green cred is far outweighed by his credentials as a connector -- he makes connections (he's in business development) for a social networking site (LinkedIn) -- I think this bodes well for the EV future. Of course, given his more corporate profile I wasn't surprised that he chose a modified EV as a point of entry into the electric world.
His last car was a Prius and he upgraded to a Chevy Volt, which like the Prius is technically a hybrid. But unlike conventional hybrids, it's nearly always powered by it's electric motor so while he has a total range of about 379 miles, his electric range is only about 40 miles.Samsung VP-M50 Battery
Volt videogame
And this is where the car starts to change behavior, and I would argue, what makes it a game changer. With its tiny gas engine, the Volt is attractive to a more mainstream customer with range anxiety, but thanks to series of built-in nudges, the car doesn't let you forget that the most efficient way to drive is by trying to maximize your electric miles. Sony NP-FG1 Battery
It's a type of Volt videogame to clock a new mpg personal best. There's the on-board computer that gives you a running reminder of your mpg (or the electric equivalent), as well as driving tips to help you improve upon it (e.g. driving technique, climate control).
And then there's the iPhone app where my friend proudly showed me his lifetime mpg. He also flashed me the breakdown of electric miles he'd traveled since his last fuel up versus gas miles clocked and it was obvious which was the goal.Sony NP-FG1 Charger
An EV state of mind
The Chevy Volt has weathered critique -- it's too expensive, it's not really an electric car, the environmental cost of two motors -- but the car is still a game changer because it's forcing its owners to really think about where their fuel comes from, every morning and night.
When I met up with my friend last week at the end of his commute, within the first 5 minutes of seeing him (after a year spent on separate continents), he explained he needed to pull into the garage to plug in.
He was in an EV state of mind. Since he was on vacation and away from his 240 volt home charger, he knew he needed all 10 hours before returning to work to top off his Canon LP-E10 battery with the 120V charger.
Since I was spending the night with my friend (Scott Roberts) and his family, I pulled out my camera to document an overnight with the Volt.

Lenovo ThinkPad X220: the customisable ultralight travel laptop

This week Australian Business Traveller is scoping out the best Windows notebooks for frequent business travellers. These high-flying laptops deliver just the right mix of maximum computing power and long hp pavilion dv6000 battery life in a slim, light yet robust package.
Most ultra-light travel laptops come in just one or two configurations, but the ThinkPad X220 series comes in three -- and can then be customised even further to suit your needs.
This flexible configuration really sets it apart from many of the competitors in this space. Often, because the manufacturing of extremely thin and light notebooks is so intricate and delicate, computer makers offer a one-size-fits-all configuration.
Lenovo has managed to preserve the flexibility for its factory to swap parts depending on what customers need. As a result, the notebook isn't as thin as some of its competitors, but it's very light. (Dell vostro 1400 battery)
Of course, the ThinkPad isn't going to win any beauty contests when put up for parade alongside some of the other ultra-thin and light notebooks.
It's finished in the traditional rugged ThinkPad black plastic -- no fancy brushed duralumin or easily scuffed aluminium here. In fact, the visual style of the ThinkPad hasn't changed much in 10 years, but that's just the way ThinkPad owners like it -- these machines are renowned for their durability and no-nonsense design.
Lenovo claims "incredibly long dell inspiron 1545 battery life" for these models, with up to 16 hours using the standard six-cell TOSHIBA dynabook satellite 1800 ac adapter battery included. A nine-cell Sony vaio vgn-cr510e/j battery is available as an optional extra.
Other nice improvements over older ThinkPad models include screen hinges that keep the laptop closed without needing a latching hook at the front, a giant touchpad, and even drain-holes in the spill resistant keyboard.
The laptop also has two microphones for improved noise cancellation during voice and video conferencing, keyboard noise suppression technology to make typing in calls possible and a dedicated LED-lit microphone mute key so you can easily drop out of a conversation without having to go hunting for the mute button in Skype.
Rather than describing all the ports and connectors provided, this image from Lenovo explains them well:
Lenovo is currently offering the X220 with three years' manufacturer's warranty, which is a great bit of additional value. Most laptops only come with 12 months.
Note -- Lenovo has another ultra-thin and light notebook, the ThinkPad X1, which is considerably thinner than the X220 at just 1.69cm. However, we think the X220 is a better choice for most business travellers, as it has long HP pavilion zd7000 battery life, while the X1 is very limited in this respect. The X1 is also heavier at 1.69KG than the X220, at 1.45KG.

Size and Weight

The X220 is a 12.5" notebook, so a tad smaller in screen-size than the 13.3" that has become the norm for ultra-thin and light travel laptops. But it doesn't trade screen resolution, so you'll still see the same amount on an X220 screen as a Toshiba Portege R700 or a Samsung Notebook Series 9.(Dell inspiron 1525 battery)
Its weight is from 1.45KG, putting it squarely in race alongside the lightest laptops on the market. Of course, since the configuration can be customised at the time of order, the weight will vary a little depending on what parts you choose.
The main disappointment in the X220 is its thickness (and the absence of this information on just about all of Lenovo's website information and marketing materials shows that the company is aware of its weakness on this front). The laptop is 1.9cm at its thinnest point, rising up to a chunky 3.46cm at its thickest.(Dell inspiron 1521 battery)

What you get

There are three models to choose from, before you start customising options. All of them use the latest generation "Sandy Bridge" Intel Core processing chips, which are really fast.
Impressively, Lenovo is not using the "ultra-low voltage" versions which dial down their speed in exchange for longer battery life; it is instead using the full power versions typically found in larger 14" and 15" laptops.
Lenovo claims the X220s run up to 75 percent faster than their ultraportable competitors that use low-powered CPUs.(HP pavilion dv6000 battery)
None of the models have an optical drive built-in (something that we think is a good decision for a thin-and-light notebook, as downloadable movies and internet-based software updates mean DVD drives are rapidly becoming last century's technology, along with floppy disk drives and dial-up modems.)
If you still want to use a DVD drive with the X220 you can get a slimline USB one from any computer shop for less than $100, or buy the Lenovo docking base, which provides an optical drive bay.

The basic $1799 model

The entry-level model has an Intel Core i5 processing chip, running at 2.3GHz -- which is pretty snappy without being top of the range, 2GB memory and a 320GB traditional mechanical hard drive for storage. The 2GB memory is the least you'd want to use with Windows 7, and most laptops now come with 4GB, because with several apps open at once, Windows may start to slow down with only 2GB memory.(Sony vgp-bps9 battery )
The 320GB storage is plenty for most people, but the fact that it's a mechanical hard drive and not one of the newer solid state drives that use high speed flash memory will be a bottleneck in the system performance. Traditional hard drives with moving parts really slow down the booting and application loading time on machines that use very fast processing chips like this one.(Sony pcga-bp1n battery)
However, this basic model has no webcam, which means making Skype video calls won't be possible without using an external webcam (and that rather goes against the concept of an ultraportable laptop).
Also, oddly, it also omits Bluetooth -- pretty much a standard thing for all notebooks these days -- which counts out wireless keyboards and mice unless a plug-in adaptor is used -- though that can be added in to the mix for another $14 during the order process (a camera can't be added as a custom option).
There's no option to get 3G mobile broadband built in to the base model.(compaq presario x1000 ac adapter)

The $1,959 mid-range model

This model has a slightly faster processor chip than the basic one -- 2.5GHz compared to 2.3GHz Intel Core i5.
It also has twice the amount of memory -- 4GB -- which is what we'd recommend for good performance with Windows 7.
If you want to trade the old, slow mechanical 320GB hard drive for a faster solid state drive you can, with this model. It'll cost $460 more, and your storage will halve from 320GB to 160GB -- but you'll be enjoying the lightning speed that an SSD can provide. (Lenovo has a note on its ordering page saying that swapping to an SSD may delay your order by up to four weeks, though.)(dell inspiron 1525 ac adapter)
It also can't be used with a docking station, which means you'll need to plug in all your cords each time you get back to your desk. However, unlike the basic model, it does come with Bluetooth built in, so you'll be able to use it with a wireless keyboard and mouse.
It has a high-definition webcam as well, so Skype video chats will be no problem.
It doesn't come with 3G mobile broadband capability, and this is not a configurable option -- that's only available in the top model.

The $2,889 top model

This is the model most business travellers will probably want to buy. It includes the Intel Core i7 2.7GHz powerplant in it, which is the fastest dual-core chip Intel offers.
It also gets USB 3.0, which provides much faster data transfer for fast devices like memory keys, and to a limited extent, faster copying to and from USB hard drives.(HP omnibook 6000 ac adapter)
Another sweet feature is basic in-built 3G mobile broadband -- so you can just slip a SIM card in wherever you're travelling to and avoid paying hotel internet rates. For an extra $125, you can even upgrade to a better 3G module inside the laptop that will support Telstra's 21Mbit/s Next G download speeds.
It comes with a docking station in the box at no additional cost (see below for more details).
However, oddly for a top-shelf model, it doesn't have an option to swap the 320GB hard drive for a faster solid state disk flash-memory based model. Of course, this is something you can add yourself, or get added by a computer shop technician quite easily, but it's still a surprising omission for a top-of-the-line unit.

Docking options

Lenovo sells a $218.90 docking station for the Thinkpad X220 (HP pavilion zt1145 ac adapter), called the "ThinkPad Series 3 UltraBase". As mentioned above, it comes standard with the top-of-the-line X220 at no extra cost.
The UltraBase has a bay for an optical drive or second hard drive -- ideal if you've gone for the 160GB solid state drive option and want more storage when you're back at your desk.
It has a VGA monitor port for connection to older style monitors or projectors, as well as a DisplayPort -- the newest type of digital connector that practically no monitors use yet, so you'll probably need to buy a DisplayPort to DVI or HDMI adaptor, too.(Dell inspiron 15 ac adapter)
The dock also provides Gigabit Ethernet for connecting to corporate networks, four USB 2.0 ports, and power and audio pass-through.
